I’m writing this while wearing the Even Realities G2. On my desk sit two pairs from Rokid. The Meta Ray-Ban Display is charging nearby with its Neural Wristband. In the closet: six pairs of $50 smart sunnies some Walmart rep sent me, plus Xreal, RayNeo, Lucyd, and an old Razer Anzu. Later I’m calling my optician about the new Ray-Ban Meta Optics because supposedly they can handle my prescription.
I have more smart eyewear than I know what to do with. And more is coming.

Here’s the thing nobody wants to admit: smart glasses are still looking for a reason to exist. I’ve been testing these things for years, and the pattern is always the same. Great hardware, interesting tech, then you put them on and realize there’s nothing you actually need them for that your phone doesn’t already do better.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display with the wristband is probably the most polished experience I’ve tested. The Neural Wristband gesture control actually works, which surprised me. But after the novelty wears off, I’m still just checking notifications on my face instead of my wrist. Is that progress?
Rokid’s latest pair has better display quality than I expected. The Even Realities G2 is comfortable enough to wear all day, which is rare. But comfort doesn’t matter when the software is half-baked. These companies keep shipping hardware first and promising software later, and later never really comes.
The $50 Walmart specials are exactly what you’d expect. They work as sunglasses with basic audio. The lenses are cheap. The audio is tinny. But they prove one thing: the hardware barrier is dropping. Anyone can slap a speaker and a camera into frames now. The hard part is making people want to wear them.
I’ve been doing this long enough to remember Google Glass. We’ve come a long way since then in terms of miniaturization, battery life, and display quality. But the fundamental question remains unanswered: why? Why do I need information floating in my field of view? Why do I need to take photos with my glasses? The use cases that exist – navigation, notifications, quick photos – are all things my phone does without making me look like a cyborg.
Some people argue it’s about being present. Don’t look at your phone, just glance at your glasses. That’s a nice idea, but in practice you’re still distracted. You’re just distracted in a different way. And now you’re also worried about battery life, connectivity, and whether people think you’re recording them.
The privacy thing is real. I’ve had people ask if I’m filming them. I’ve had restaurants ask me to remove them. The social friction hasn’t gone away just because the hardware got smaller. If anything, it’s worse because the glasses are more discreet, which makes people more suspicious.
I called my optician about the Ray-Ban Meta Optics. They said my prescription is borderline for the current lens options. That’s another problem: if you need serious vision correction, smart glasses are still a gamble. You’re either locked into whatever the manufacturer offers or paying out of pocket for custom lenses that may or may not work with the tech.
I’m not saying smart glasses are doomed. The technology is impressive. The Even Realities G2 has the best display I’ve seen in this form factor. The Meta wristband is genuinely innovative. But hardware innovation without a clear use case is just a science project.
What would make me actually wear these every day? Killer app. Something I can’t do on my phone. Real-time language translation that works without looking down. Navigation that actually overlays on the real world in a useful way. A heads-up display for cyclists that doesn’t require a separate computer. Nobody’s nailed this yet.
Until someone does, I’ll keep testing. But I’m tired of being a beta tester for hardware that’s looking for a job. These companies need to spend less time on industrial design and more time on what the hell you’re supposed to do with the thing once you put it on.
