Musk vs. Altman: The AI Trial Nobody Wanted, Everybody’s Getting

The trial between Elon Musk and OpenAI is officially underway. And yeah, it’s going to be a mess. Not the kind of mess you can ignore either—this is the kind where a lot of important people’s secrets get dragged into the sunlight, whether they like it or not.

We’re talking about the early days of AI, who deserves credit for what, who gets the cash, and a whole lot more. Over the next few weeks, expect to hear things that were probably meant to stay behind closed doors. Which, honestly, might be exactly what Musk is going for.

On a recent episode of The Vergecast, Liz Lopatto broke down how this case started, how it actually got to trial, and why it matters beyond the courtroom drama. If you’re a Verge subscriber, you can catch the ad-free version wherever you get your podcasts. Not a subscriber? You can sign up here.

Personally, I think this trial is less about justice and more about ego—but that doesn’t mean it won’t have real consequences. The way AI developed in those early years shaped everything we’re dealing with now, from safety debates to who controls the most powerful technology on the planet. Having all that aired out in public? That’s going to be uncomfortable for a lot of people.

The real question is whether any of this actually changes how the industry operates. My bet is no, but I’ve been wrong before. Stay tuned.
